Spring arrives with daffodils in April and from May onwards valley walking, with the snow-topped mountains above you, is spectacular. May and June have fewer visitors and are exceptionally pretty.
Summer sees the arrival of cyclists testing their legs on the famous Tour de France routes over the Col du Tourmalet and up to Luz-Ardiden. For hikers - from families spotting marmots and isards to serious climbers with their ice picks - there are walks for everyone, along with a varied range of summer activities. The Luz Altitude Jazz Festival runs each year over the 2nd weekend of July.
In Autumn the colours of the changing leaves lend themselves nicely to more cultural exploration – the mountain villages and churches, wild blueberry and muchroom picking and the local lamb festival on the last weekend of Sept.
In Winter you have the choice of three downhill ski stations in the valley, Luz Ardiden, Gèdre-Gavarnie and Barèges-La Mongie which includes the Pic du Midi off-piste descent from 2877m. Enough to keep you amused during a week of skiing.
