In the heart of
the “Pay Toy”, this family run hotel is the
perfect base for discovering Lourdes and the High Pyrenees. 30
kms from Lourdes,
80 kms from Pau, and 2 hours from Toulouse and Biarritz, the traditional
French mountain village of Luz-St-Sauveur
is on the doorstep of the Mont
Perdu World Heritage Area. Situated half way between Lourdes
and Gavarnie,
Luz makes a great base for a pilgrimage to Lourdes and an exploration
of the high route to Santiago de Compostella through Héas
and Gavarnie.
In winter you will appreciate the easy access to three
of the best downhill ski stations in the Pyrenees. Luz-Ardiden
is 13 kms, Barèges-Tourmalet
only 9 kms and Gavarnie
20 kms. Perfect for the independent skier looking for something
different, and with Ryan Air flights to Pau, an easy mid-week
break at exceptionally good value.
In spring the wildflowers arrive and the valley
walking, with the snow-topped mountains above you, is spectacular.
June in particular has fewer visitors and is exceptionally pretty.
Summer sees the arrival of cyclists testing their
legs on the famous Tour
de France routes over the Col du Tourmalet and
up to Luz-Ardiden. For hikers - from families spotting marmots
and izards to serious climbers with their ice picks - there are
walks for everyone, along with a varied range of summer activities.
Summer also brings the Luz
Altitude Jazz Festival, this year from the 7-10 July, along
with a whole program
of concerts in the St André church and around Luz.
In autumn the colours of the changing leaves
lend themselves nicely to more cultural exploration – the
mountain villages and churches, wild blueberry and muchroom picking
and the local lamb festival (28-30 Sept). The valley offers two
well equipped thermal spa centres (Luz
and Barèges)
to sooth away any aches.
The hotel is run by an English speaking Australian-French couple
who are happy to help with directions, suggestions and translations.
Whatever the season, and your activity, we look forward to hosting
your visit.
